Our projects are developed by our membership, often in collaboration with our partner organizations around the world.  If you would like to get involved in our projects on an individual basis, you can learn more about membership in The Global Pro Bono Bar at our Membership Details page.  Opportunities for institutions to provide membership for their members or employees are described on our Institutional Discounts page as well.

ONGOING PROJECTS

Project No. 2020-01:  Crossing Borders to Fight Modern Slavery (Southeast Asia)

  • Objective:  As requested by International Justice Mission, to conduct and publish a review of laws relating to trafficking, forced labor, labor migration, online sexual exploitation, money laundering, criminal procedure, victim compensation, and social service minimum standards for Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, & China.
  • Target Completion Date:  15 July 2020

Project No. 2020-02:  Project Sustainable Future

  • Objective:  To expand, organize and focus existing legal resources globally in order to create renewable and sustainable legal initiatives locally that advance knowledge and advocacy in the fight against human trafficking and modern slavery in Southeast Asia via the establishment of The Global Pro Bono Centre for Advocacy (Southeast Asia).
  • Target Completion Date:    31 December 2022

Project No. 2020-03:  Legal Professionalism Publication Project

  • Objective:  To emphasize the role of individual conscience in the critical development of a “living, breathing, legal professionalism” and to unleash the vast untapped potential of individual Advocates of Conscience within the global legal profession for cross-border public interest engagement.
  • Target Completion Date:  Ongoing 

Project No. 2020-04:  The Global Pro Bono Pledge

    • Objective:  To launch and develop The Global Pro Bono Pledge as an advocacy tool calling upon law firms and in-house legal departments around the world to become signatories, recognizing the individual capacity for pro bono project selection by each legal professional as an indispensable prerequisite to the realization of access to justice around the world and as a necessary element of meaningful professional identity.

    Project No. 2020-05:  The Global Pro Bono Bar Expansion Project

      • Objective:  To develop Student Chapters of The Global Pro Bono Bar on law school campuses, promoting the education and development of individual Advocates of Conscience and increasing capacity for public interest and pro bono advocacy for, inter alia, the global administration of justice and advancement of human rights.
      • Institutional Partners:  N/A
      • Target Completion Date:   Ongoing

      Project No. 2020-06:  The Global Pro Bono Practitioners Program 

        • Objective:  To develop interesting and meaningful CLE / CPD training opportunities to educate and integrate lawyers around the world into the cross-border fight against modern slavery as a meaningful and important exercise of conscience and professional responsibility, increasing global pro bono legal capacity.
        • Institutional Partners:  TBA
        • Target Completion Date:  31 December 2020 

        Project No. 2020-07:  Good Governance in International Arbitration  

          • Objective:  To assess the state-of-play of transparency and good governance tools in international arbitration through a survey of major arbitral institutions and key stakeholders, publishing and disseminating the survey results to promote understanding of the critical role of the public interest in international arbitration.
          • Institutional Partners:  N/A
          • Target Completion Date:  31 December 2021 

          Project No. 2020-08:  The Global Pro Bono Clinical Program (USA)

            • Objective:  To develop local pro bono and public interest support capacity as well as critical advocacy through global resourcing and network development to assist those in greatest need of cross-border legal assistance in the United States.
            • Institutional Partners:  N/A
            • Target Completion Date:  Ongoing   

            Project No. 2020-09:  Slavery in The Americas (South America)

            • Objective:  To survey national laws and international treaties or agreements among States of the Americas in relation to human trafficking and modern slavery to conduct a comparative study that identifies similarities and differences, relative effectiveness and enforcement, and best practices in the region.
            • Target Completion Date:  30 June 2021

            Project No. 2020-10:  International Lawyering in the Public Interest

              • Objective:  To explore the theory and practice of international lawyering as a basis for identification of best practices and the development of an enhanced understanding of the role of public interest or pro bono engagement in international legal professionalism.

              PAST PROJECTS

              Project No. 2019-01:  Effectiveness of Key Justice Systems (Southeast Asia)

                • Objective:  To develop a written literature review of existing studies of the effectiveness of regional or national justice systems and their responses to Trafficking in Persons crimes in Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos and China.
                • Completion Date:  10 August 2019

                Project No. 2019-02:  ASEAN Protocols Against Slavery (Southeast Asia)

                  • Objective:  To develop a written review of regional cross-border anti-trafficking protocols, agreements, and related treaties across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (“ASEAN”), mapping and analyzing all bilateral and multilateral interconnections in ASEAN as well as other resources for governments to utilize.  
                  • Completion Date:  10 August 2019

                  Project No. 2019-03:  Cross-Border Collaboration (Southeast Asia)

                    • Objective:  To research case studies of effective cross-border anti-slavery collaboration between law enforcement officials, primarily from an ASEAN perspective, but also incorporating relevant global case studies for the regional cross-border context in Southeast Asia.
                    • Completion Date:  10 August 2019


                    Project No. 2018-01:  The Role of the Public Interest in International Law

                      • ObjectiveTo develop transnational scholarship in support of The Role of Public Interest Engagement in Developing International Law: From Pro Bono Practice to Private Sector Involvementa panel sponsored by The Global Pro Bono Bar at the 78th biennial conference of the International Law Association in Sydney, Australia.
                      • Speaker Affiliations:  Humanity United, K&L Gates LLP, LexisNexis, and The Global Pro Bono Bar Association.
                      • Completion Date:  22 August 2018
