Crossing Borders to Fight Modern Slavery (Southeast Asia)

The following opportunities are developing for pro bono collaboration with International Justice Mission (https://www.ijm.org/), the largest international anti-slavery organization in the world:

  • Developing a Professional Review of Trafficking-Related Laws in Key Jurisdictions (Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, and China);

  • Developing a Professional Review of the Effectiveness of Key Justice Systems to Enforce Anti-Trafficking Laws (Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, and China);

  • Developing a Professional Review of International Protocols and Agreements (International);

  • Developing a Summary of Key Case Studies & Best Practices of Global Collaboration Against Transnational Crime (Knowledge Sharing for Southeast Asia); and

  • Developing a Regional Network for Survivors to Pursue Civil Remedies Against Traffickers (Southeast Asia).

The Global Pro Bono Bar could use members’ help in legal research, team leadership, and other supporting tasks in association with this project. 2019 Global Pro Bono Student Competition in Support of Liberty Shared

The Global Pro Bono Bar is collaborating with Liberty Shared (https://libertyshared.org/), the Asian Law Students Association (“ALSA” - http://alsainternational.org/), and UCLA’s Legal Ethics and the Profession (“LEAP”) Program to develop the 2019 Global Pro Bono Student Competition in support of Liberty Shared. This year’s competition will highlight the following regional categories and focal topics:

  • Research on Corporate Responsibility (Asia)

  • Research on Legal Privilege (Americas)

  • Research on Consumer Protection Laws (Global)

The Global Pro Bono Bar could use assistance from members and others with institutional sponsorship (e.g., law firms interested in offering internships to students with winning entries), student submission evaluation, and other supporting tasks in association with this competition.
